The snow won't let go at Arcadia. 

EXETER, RI -- In a winter that just won't let go, the Southern New England Field Trial Club's annual spring trial, set for April 3-5, 2015, has been cancelled due to an overwhelming amount of snow at Arcadia Management Area. 

Chairman Tim Cavanaugh was notified by the RI DEM's Fish & Wildlife Department that the roads into Arcadia Management Area are impassable and the grounds still mostly snow covered.

Plans are being made to reschedule the trial. Stay tuned.

     Earl and Margaret Drew, formerly of Massachusetts, now residing in North Carolina, also made the trek farther south this winter! They stayed with George and Mary Tracy in Hurtsboro, Ala., escaping the formidible amounts of snow that blanketed New England, and the colder-than-usual weather in North Carolina. 

     While they were in Hurtsboro, they trained and ran their pointer, I'm Earl, in the National Amateur Free-For-All at Sedgefields Plantation, near Union Springs, Ala. Eighty-three dogs were drawn and, happily for Earl and Margaret, I'm Earl made the hour and didn't get lost! He had one back and a large covey find on wild birds. 

     He also got to have his picture taken by master photographer, Chris Mathan, of Maine, who was also down South escaping the rotten New England weather!

     Good to see all these local folks on the road!

SNE Woodcock Championship Cancelled

SOUTHERN  NEW ENGLAND WOODCOCK  CHAMPIONSHIP CANCELLED EXETER, RI -- The Southern New England Woodcock Championship and Joel Collier Derby, originally scheduled for March 20-23, 2015, at Arcadia Management Area, have been cancelled due to heavy snow cover. For those familiar with Arcadia, here's a picture of the gate after you take the left past the former Camp E-Hun-Tee, now the RI DEM Fish & Wildlife Education Center. Roads are neither plowed nor passible.

Miss American Pie, a pointer female owned by Dave O'Brien of Marlborough, Conn., handled by Pat Casey, of South Hill, Va. (formerly of Massachusetts), and scouted by John Stolgitis, of Rhode Island, placed second in the United States Shooting Dog Futurity held Jan. 27-29, 2015, at the Sandhills Field Trial Area near Hoffman, N.C. Forty-four dogs were entered in the event. Judges were Mack and Nan Hilliard of West End, N.C.

Miss American Pie, also known as "Kate," was bred by Stacey Goodie. The pointer was handled by Casey to two finds, a back and one unproductive, coupled with a classy forward ground coverage, according to reporter Mike Husenits.

First-place winner was Sinbad's Bear, a pointer male owned by John Roswech of Chester, N.J., bred by Rob and Lisa Butler of La Grange, Ky., and handled by Shawn Kinkelaar. Third was Waybetter Rocky, pointer male owned and bred by Carl and Collin Bishop of Punxsutawey, Pa., and handled by Car Bishop. Fourth place was Ladywood's Keepsake, pointer female owned by Becky Johnson of Glenvile, Pa., Brian Sanchez of Central Islip, NY., and Ted Foust of Harrisburg Pa., and bred and handled by Keanette Tracy of Glenville, Pa.

Upon completion of the initial 30-minute series, judges called back 14 contenders for the one-hour second-series. Performances are judged based on the entire 90 minutes.
