Results - Southern New England Woodcock Championship

RICHFIELD SILVER LINING
 WINS 2013 SOUTHERN
 NEW ENGLAND WOODCOCK CHAMPIONSHIP;
MAGIC MIST BANDIT
 NAMED RUNNERUP
The Southern New England Woodcock Championship concluded Sunday, March 24, at Arcadia Management Area in Rhode Island. Thirty-seven dogs were drawn for the three-day stake.

The winner, Richfield Silver Lining, a pointer male bred by Richard Giuliano of Coventry, RI,  owned by Claudia McNamee of Waccabuc, NY, and handled by John Stolgitis of Ashaway, RI, ran in the 17th brace. Runnerup champion, Magic Mist Bandit, a setter female owned and handled by Joe Dahl, of Bangor, Maine, ran in the 16th brace.

According to Bob Fleury, secretary of the South County Field Trial Club, host of the championship, the bird count during the weekend was well over 100. "The amazing thing," Fleury says, "is that several braces were cut short for breach of manners, and had they finished the hour, the bird count would have been higher.

"We are running four courses this year," said Fleury, "and all four courses have produced
multiple birds. In the 34 years of my association with this event, this bird count exceeds, by far, any of the past. It is apparent that the stars lined up properly and the bird gods smiled on us, but the truth of the matter is that because of the weather conditions of this spring are so out of sync that the migration north [of woodcock] has been stalled here and the birds have piled up. If there can be any complaint about this year's event, it may be that there are too many birds, and how many times has that occurred in a wild bird trial?

"The South County club is extremely pleased with having the opportunity to host such a record-breaking event."

Judges were Mike Best of St.  John, New Brunswick, and Bob Little of Fredericton, New Brunswick. Championship secretary was Jill Stolgitis and stake manager was Ed McGovern.

2013 Joel Collier Derby Stake

WINNERS NAMED
 IN JOEL COLLIER
 DERBY STAKE
First place to Woodcock Haven Stella, Second to Chasehill Bud Lite

EXETER, RI -- Woodcock Haven Stella, a pointer female handled by Russ Ogilvie of New Brunswick, Canada, earned the blue ribbon at Thursday's Joel Collier Derby stake held at Arcadia Management Area. Second place went to Chasehill Bud Lite, a pointer male handled by John Stolgitis and owned by Jim Kilrain of Braintree, Mass. Jim was in the gallery to see his pointer run.

Judges were Elias Richardson of Uxbridge, Mass., and John Malone of Bolton, Conn. Fourteen dogs were entered in the stake. The derby is the prelude to the Southern New England Woodcock Championship which starts Friday, March 22, at Arcadia.

Judges also looked hard at Celtic's Strike, an Irish setter male, handled by Robert Ecker, and Tyson, a pointer male also handled by John Stolgitis. They gave a big shout-out to young Kelsey Dellinger for the outstanding handing of her setter female Snuff Mill Atalanta and said to expect big things from that dog in the future. Nice job, Kelsey!

Temperatures hovered around 30 degrees for the day-long trial, yet enough snow had melted that it wasn't too much of an issue. Birds were plentiful and boy, could they fly!

Just the sign you want to see when you're heading for a field trial. Enough already, winter!
